Best Ways to Stay in Telluride

New Sheridan Hotel - Telluride

I have to say I am a bit biased as to where to stay in Telluride.  I definitely think you get a better feel for the charm of the town (and get to enjoy the ease of walking) when you stay in the town of Telluride as opposed to Mountain Village (the built up resort side on the other side of the mountain from town).  Mountain Village does have some beautiful luxury hotels, and is where you can rent a 15,000 square foot 12 bedroom home if that’s what you are after, but you will need to rely on the gondola, taxis, and driving to get you to the heart of Telluride and it’s restaurants, shops and nightlife.  I will however, highlight some incredible lodging options in both areas.

Top Three Town of Telluride Stays:

  • Camel’s Garden Hotel located right at the base of lift 8 and the gondola and 2 blocks to Main Street.  They recently renovated the rooms and have the Atmosphere Day Spa, Telluride Sports Ski Shop and the X Café all on premise.  Make sure you ask about the condos for rent on the top floor. They are privately owned and really comfortable and well-decorated.  The four bedroom penthouse at the Camel’s Garden is my favorite place to stay in town.
  • The New Sheridan Hotel just went through a huge renovation and although the rooms are small they all have that great historic Telluride feel, and there is a great bar and restaurant on site.  It’s right on Main Street so at times noise can be an issue, although there really isn't too much traf.  Make sure you get a room with a view, not a room looking at a brick wall.
  • Hotel Columbia has more of a B& B boutique feel, but was also recently renovated to have a slicker more modern look.  I love the Cosmopolitan restaurant on site and I think they did a great job re-doing the rooms.  It is also located right at the base of the gondola and is dog-friendly.

Top Mountain Village Stays:

  • The Lumiere is by far my favorite new hotel.  I wish it was right in downtown Telluride as it boasts of luxury that does not really exist in town.  If you are willing to give up the idea of being right in the Town of Telluride, this is the spot.  It is a super high-end boutique hotel with a great bar that serves sushi après-ski.  It is also, ski-in/ ski-out.
  • Capella is anther new hotel in Mountain Village.  They have nice rooms, a lot of them and has a great little restaurant and bar called Suede.
  • The Peaks Resort has gone through some tough times in the last few years.  It was the first big hotel in the Mountain Village but has been for sale and has struggled to find a buyer.  You can get great rates but might have some mediocre food and service.  At the same time it could be a great place for the kids as it has a full spa, gym, swimming pool and waterslide.  It is also ski in/ski out.

You can check availability for all hotels (and condos) through SkiResorts.com - input your destination in the blue "Plan Your Vacation" Box or call 800-446-4908 to speak to one of our expert travel agents.
