Bretton Woods Ski Resort is the perfect place for family skiing in New Hampshire. Whether you have little ones learning for the first time (or you are learning for the first time), or if you have teens riding on their own, or if you want to head off on your own into the glades, Bretton Woods has it all. For starters, they've got a sweet little quad chair that services a nice and easy slope for first timers - you could easily spend all day running up and down this one hill. Once everyone in your group is ready to head out on bigger runs, there are plenty of wide-open trails on the mountain to explore.

If going it alone is more your style, Bretton Woods is the perfect place to sneak off to without the family after a few inches of snow. Due to the mountain’s proximity to the western flanks of Mount Washington, a few inches of snow seem to multiply in depth. And if the weather isn’t cooperating you don’t need to worry because snow making will take care of it – plus they get plenty of chilly evenings to blow out tons of the white stuff for an even base.

In regards to lodging, more and more slope-side condominiums have been built to account for the increase in weeklong visitors, and the growth of European travelers that are visiting New Hampshire. With the renovations done to the Mount Washington Hotel, there are a few comparable high-end options for local stays. Plus nothing compares to the amenities at “The Hotel” – like the 25,000 square foot spa. Your next best options are in the next town over in North Conway,a 30-minute commute down through Crawford Notch. Keep in mind Crawford Notch is not an easy commute during the height of Winter – it’s beautiful, but sometimes it gets ugly.

Nightlife in Bretton Woods is relegated to "The Cave" in the basement of the Mount Washington, or again you can always head to North Conway, but don't expect a lot more options there, except maybe some live music at the Red Parka Pub (and over in Jackson the Shannon Door Pub will often have live entertainment).

Good eats, plenty of local brews, burgers and pub food can be had at Fabyans. If you're looking for more elegant fare, head right to the Mount Washington Hotel, for more than enough elegance. Otherwise, your only other options are at the base of the mountain, where you can get good Mexican food at the Taco Quad. But don't wonder too far from the ski area or The Mount Washington Hotel, because there is no real "town" to hang out in while your taking a day off. A few ski shops are sprinkled nearby but little in the way of cafes, shops or town experience.

Bretton Woods offer plenty of terrain variety for the whole family, and probably not the place to pick if you are looking for steep action. But there's always more snow than the other resorts in New Hampshire, which makes it easier to stumble upon trackless stashes. Lodging and après ski is limited but the solitude, incredible views, wide-open runs, small crowds and plenty of lifts more than make up for it.
