Loon Mountain Ski Resort offers great terrain and two towns with a lot of options, but once the clock hits 9:00pm the shutters close-up because it’s a popular day-trip destination - particularly for Bostonians (it's any easy shot right up 93 from Beantown), so don't be surprised if you bump into your financial adviser at the bar or in the lift line.

Loon is located in Lincoln, but has access to nearby Woodstock as well. And both towns have a few gems that should not be missed. As I mentioned, nightlife is pretty much non-existent, but there is no lack of dining and après ski beers. The Woodstock Inn, Station & Brewery should be visited for at least one lunch and one dinner. The menu has a great variety (they even serve up frog legs). I won't even go into the beer that's brewed on the premises - Pig's Ear Brown, Red Rack Ale…the list goes on and on.

Fine Dining in the area is done best at The Sugar Hill Inn. It's a little north of Loon, but worth the trip for the award winning dinners served, and the town of Sugar Hill has that great New England charm that shouldn't be missed. Slope-side offerings are the usual cafeteria fare, or you can get some casual eats at The Black Diamond Bar and Grille, which is a few steps up. I will add that if you want a great espresso or coffee, head up the Kancamagus Highway (Main St./ Rt 112) and go to Half Baked & Fully Brewed. Not only do they have the best cup of joe in the area, they also offer a ton of premade meals, that are perfect if you want decide to eat in.

But enough about eating and drinking, the real treats are on the slope – as in endless steep runs. Facing almost dead north, the snow on Loon manages to stick around longer and melt less than it does on the surrounding mountains. Being located so close to Franconia Notch, Loon also gets a few bonus inches of snowfall when other places are just getting clouds. Intermediates and beginners will be happy to know that the groomers keep the corduroy smooth and silky on most of the mountain, while staying off the big and scary runs like Rip Saw – so the more adventurous skiers can have their fun as well. If you are looking for something else, there are three sizable terrain parks that are full of enough half-pipes to keep any rider content.

When it comes to lodging, Lincoln has a truckload of townhouses and condos in town, but the Mountain Club is THEE slope-side hotel, offering a full-spa and amenities like an indoor and outdoor pool, and fine dining at Season's restaurant. You could spend a few days off the mountain and never leave the hotel if you preferred. For upscale townhouses and private condos check out the River Green Resort, and if budget lodging for a night or two there’s a Best Western and Comfort Inn as well. Overall, Loon Mountain is a great spot where you can get surprisingly great snow for New Hampshire. Don’t expect too much off the slopes and you will appreciate what Lincoln and Woodstock offer.
