Pico is the ultimate family resort with easy, primarily flat, wide-open groomers. For the less experienced of skiers, Pico is the ideal resort to learn how to ski in the trees and offers spacious and approachable glade skiing for the whole family. In contrast to neighboring Killington Resort, Pico is much smaller, hosts fewer skiers on a daily basis, and offers less challenging terrain. Given the mountain’s proximity to Rutland, VT, skiers and snowboarders from the neighboring city are the most frequent visitors.

A relatively small resort, Killington has had plenty of comfort updates. The chair lifts are modern and fast, with the longest chair ride lasting about six minutes. With the lack of lift lines, and the ability to quickly and comfortably navigate the wide range of intermediate and beginner terrain, the focus of the mountain is family-oriented, with the majority of skiers perusing the mountain at a leisurely pace. With much of the clientele focused on the groomed easy riding trailer, more adventurous skiers can reap the benefits of untracked snow in the trees and on the handful of black diamond runs. Although on a powder day, the majority of fresh snow will still get tracked out fairly quickly. Powder is powder after all.

Offering not much more than a small village, Pico is not the resort of choice if you’re looking for nightlife and endless après ski activities. The central location for anything après is definitely taking place at the Last Run Day Lodge – a lodge and bar reminiscent of an old ski chalet. In truth, with the family-friendly atmosphere, most off-mountain options are day time activities, ranging from sleigh rides, to snowmobile tours, indoor rock climbing, snow shoeing, ice fishing, ice skating, sledding, and cross country skiing.

If that isn’t enough for you, you can definitely take the short drive to Rutland, VT – a larger city that is home to many bars, shops, and restaurants. A few dinner options of note are: The Victorian Inn, Pasche’s Seafood Kitchen, Thai Star Restaurant, and Hemmingway’s for fine dining. Less challenging than most East Coast skiing options, Pico is definitely a quieter and easier resort to take the family to.

Pico Mountain is located in central Vermont on U.S. Route 4, nine miles east of Rutland and two miles west of Killington Road.

"The Bus" provides transportation around Pico and Killington, with a regular, frequent schedule around the base lodges and parking lots at Pico and Killington as well as service to the lodging properties along East Mountain Road and businesses along the Killington Road. Look for The Bus Stop Signs.The Bus even offers transportation to Rutland on a regular basis.
