Your vacation has been based on Tahoe’s South Shore and you’ve skied your heart out at Heavenly and Kirkwood. You’d like to round out your trip with a day on the slopes at Squaw Valley, but the weather is frightful and driving to the North Shore sounds like a fender-bender waiting to happen. Check your calendar: if it’s a Friday or holiday, no problem. Make a reservation on the Tahoe Queen’s North Shore Ski Shuttle (800/238-2463, 530/543-6191). Early in the morning a bus whisks you from your South Shore lodging directly to the lifts at Squaw Valley. You’ll enjoy a full day of skiing without the hassles of driving and lugging all your gear across the parking lot.
But the return trip is the best part. Dine and dance your way home as you cruise across the lake on the Mississippi-style sternwheeler paddleboat Tahoe Queen, which was recently renovated to its early 1900s luster. The trip comes complete with a live band and plenty of après-ski food and drinks available for purchase. Nonskiers, you’ll want to tag along on this excursion. While your partner tackles the slopes, you can while away a day filled with shopping, sightseeing, and dining at Squaw Valley and High Camp. For the more ambitious non-skier, ice-skating and snow tubing round out the options. Cruise tickets are available with or without a lift ticket.
