The BASICS
• 116 trails

• 485 Acres of Skiing
• 39 Miles of Trails
• 333 Inches of Annual Snowfall

Fortified with steeps, trees, beginner-intermediate areas, dangerously exposed sections, excellent snow, and diverse terrain, Stowe is one of the most versatile, and probably one of the best resorts in East Coast skiing. In fact, I would say that there are sections of the mountain that rival Western resorts.

Although Stowe offers a superb family atmosphere and excellent beginner skiing, it’s the intermediate and expert runs throughout the mountain that deserve the most respect. One of the most unique experiences is the Rock Garden, an area accessed by a twenty-minute hike above The Gondola, offers a panoramic view of central Vermont, including the city of Burlington, Lake Champlain, and the neighboring towns of the Stowe area. While skiing Rock Garden, you must use extreme caution as avalanche danger, exposed rocks, ice, and other hazards may exist. Another unique offering on Stowe is the diversity of tree skiing. While skiing in the trees, skiers can experience everything from wide-open paths on mellow trails to narrow and steep sections. I suggest Bypass, Nosedive, and Chin Clip for great woods skiing. For the more adventurous, Rt. 108 offers pristine backcountry conditions and is just a short drive away from Stowe.

Don’t be deterred if you aren’t an adventurous skier or if you have beginners in the family. They can enjoy the trails serviced by the Toll House Double chairlift, the Carpet, the Alpine Double, the Adventure Triple, and the Easy Street Double. And intermediate skiers have a wide selection of groomed trails throughout the mountain. (Note: if weather becomes overbearing, take advantage of the Lookout Double and enjoy the ride below the trees on a less windy area of the mountain.)

With the majority of snowfall occurring in December and March, skiing can be conveniently accessed before Christmas. Something else that makes the mountain unique is that Jake Burton, the owner and founder of Burton Snowboards, operates his world headquarters of Burton Snowboards in nearby Burlington, VT. So snowboard demo days, events, and professional athlete appearances are a frequent occurrence. This has also created a large snowboard community on the mountain.

The town of Stowe is a blend of passionate community members, winter sport devotees (including tele-skiers, college students, racers, snowboarders and tourists), and business owners from nearby Burlington. It offers up several options for lodging (from luxury to budget) and shopping (from ski shop to boutiques). You can also find some pretty fabulous dining options. Definitely check out The Trapp Family Lodge, which offers a casual setting in The Lounge as well as candlelight fine dining. If you seek European inspired cuisine, Michaels on the Hill is an excellent choice, and for a unique experience, venture to Mr. Pickwick’s for game and exotic creations.

It’s renowned terrain, town, local community, and vicinity to nearby Burlington makes Stowe a definite East Coast ski destination.
